How to use Command Prompt in Windows?
I think most of you already know this, but for those who don’t know, you can search CMD in the windows search.
Right click on CMD to run it as an administrator.
Alternatively, you can press Windows+R and type CMD in the dialogue box and hit enter.
Useful Windows CMD Hacks And Tricks
1. Create Wi-Fi hotspot right from the Command Prompt
This is the first and the most interesting one among the all CMD hacks and tricks listed below. It lets you create a WiFi hotspot from your windows command prompt.
You need to open Control Panel < Network & Sharing < Change Adapter Settings. There, you need to click on the connection you are using and click on Properties.
Now, go to the sharing tab and check the option “Allow other network users to connect through this computer’s internet connection”.
Now, run the command prompt as an administrator and enter the following command:
netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=allow ssid=Youthotspotname key=yourpassword
When it’s enabled, enter the given command to start the Wi-Fi hotspot:
Netsh wlan start hostednetwork
To stop it, you can simply enter this command:
netsh wlan stop hostednetwork
2. Files Encryption on Windows
Encryption is one of the most common ways to ensure that no one peeks at your data other than you.
Command prompt provides an easy way to encrypt your files on your window. So, encrypt your files to keep it away from prying eyes.
Simply run the command prompt and change the working directory to the folder your files are. After doing that, type
Cipher /E and hit enter.
Windows command prompt will encrypt the files inside that folder.
3. Hide Folders
There might be a few folders that you want to keep hidden. You can hide them by checking the hidden property of those folders. But it’ll show up once someone will change your view options to show hidden files and folders.
With this command prompt trick, you can hide your folders and files in a complete hidden manner that no one sees them.
Run the command prompt and navigate to the directory that contains the folder you want to hide.
Type the “Attrib +h +s +r Important” followed by the folder name and hit enter. Now your folder is completely hidden.
You can use “Attrib -h -s -r Important” followed by the folder name to unhide it again.
4. Changing the font colors
You have to admit that the default colors on the command prompt are a bit boring.
So I’ll tell you how you can change the default colors of the cmd by customizing it according to your liking.
Type help color in the command prompt
It will give you the list of numbers that you can use to change the colors used in the command prompt.
After choosing the color of your choice, simply type color colorcode and hit enter.
That’s it! You’ve got your desired color on the CMD window.
5. List of all commands in a session
You might have used many commands in a single session and you might wanna see them in a list to navigate directly to your desired command.
You can do it easily by just pressing F7
and a list will appear to you containing a list of all commands that you have used in a single session.
6. Scan system files for problems
You must’ve faced some issues when your system files are corrupted or broken. This might be the time to scan system files and fix the issues to maintain the smooth functioning of the system.
You can use sfc/scannow command to scan the system files by running a system file checker tool that scans Windows system files and looks for problems. If any file is missing or corrupted, it fixes them.
7. Find a WiFi password of all connected networks
Run the command prompt as an administrator.
Type netsh wlan show profile to see all the profiles that are stored in our computer.
It will enlist all the WiFi profiles you’ve ever been connected to.
Type the following command to view the password of any WiFi profile :
Netsh wlan show profile WiFi-name key=clear
Under the security settings, in the “key content”, you can see the WiFi password of that particular network.
